The caxixi (ka-shee-shee) is used across Africa and South America. It is most closely associated with Brazilian music and drumming. An inverted and closed cone, the top part of the caxixi is made from a closely weaved basket and filled with seeds or other small beads.
Often played in pairs, the sound of the caxixi can be modified by the material of the flat bottom. A wooden or gourd disc bottom will create a sharper sound while the woven sides create a softer sound. You’ll be able to create some pretty amazing rhythms with these versatile little instruments.
